Montesi, Routledge, Pastorek and 400 Free Relay Win Titles on Final Day of BIG EAST Championships

Villanova won nine medals during competition on Saturday evening

GENEVA, Ohio—Junior Kelly Montesi (Greenwich, Conn.) won her third individual gold medal of the weekend with a BIG EAST title in the 200 yard butterfly, senior Milly Routledge (North Ascot, UK) surged to a championship in the 100 yard freestyle and freshman Audrey Pastorek (Savannah, Ga.) won gold in the 200 yard backstroke on the final night of the BIG EAST Championships at the SPIRE Institute on Saturday evening. Villanova also won the 400 yard freestyle relay to close out the four-day conference meet with a team total of 906.5 points and the program's eighth consecutive BIG EAST crown.

Montesi is a 17-time gold medalist at the BIG EAST Championships, including winning eight individual titles and being a part of nine relay champions. She increased both of those totals on Saturday night as she touched the wall first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:58.94 and also led off the 400 free relay which finished with a winning time of 3:22.21. Montesi was followed by junior Abbey Berloco (Cranbury, N.J.), freshman Lexi Elkovitch (New Albany, Ohio) and Routledge in the relay lineup. Earlier in the meet Montesi had repeated as the champion of both the 200 yard individual medley and the 400 yard individual medley. She was one of two Wildcats who scored in the final of the 200 fly, as freshman Hannah Wasmuth (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) came in seventh with a time of 2:04.12.

The trio of Routledge, Berloco and Elkovitch nearly pulled off a clean sweep of the medals in the 100 free. Routledge won the event for the second straight year and posted a winning time of 50.25, while Berloco was the silver medalist with a time of 50.94. Elkovitch touched the wall in 51.20 and tied for third place and the bronze medal with a swimmer from Seton Hall.

"Our coach has been giving us different quotes everyday and today was 'swim like a senior'" Routledge said. "I tried to swim like it was the last race and there was nothing left, so that last 25 I just thought whatever you have got left put it into the last 25. It's been crazy coming from freshman year not really knowing what was going on and learning how to swim yards compared to meters, adapting everything I do and what I knew to be able to come here and swim fast. I have met some incredible people and made some truly lifelong friends, and I can't be more grateful."

Pastorek broke two minutes in the championship final of the 200 back and won with a time of 1:59.24 while overtaking the runner-up from Connecticut in the last 50 yards. Wasmuth came in fourth in 2:00.76 and was followed by junior Grace Wielar (Richmond, Va.) who finished sixth in 2:01.26. Senior Anastasia Kontrimas (Sugar Land, Texas) qualified for the consolation final and placed 12th overall with a time of 2:04.63.

"It was the last day and I really wanted to go out with a bang," Pastorek said. "That was my goal so I'm super happy right now. The upperclassmen on this team, they're such an inspiration and getting to see them go out there and do their thing and win titles makes me want to do it to. They're definitely an inspiration to me and they're part of the reason why I tried so hard to podium tonight."

Two of the other three medalists for Villanova came in the 1650 yard freestyle where the Wildcats had three of the top four finishers. Junior Nicole Welch (Beverly, Mass.) finished second in 16:53.38 to garner a silver medal, while sophomore Brenna McLaughlin (Milford, Conn.) earned bronze with a third place finish in 17:07.57. Senior Emily Provenzo (Glen Allen, Va.) came in fourth (17:10.79) and senior Andrea Fong (Moorestown, N.J.) was a fourth Villanova scorer in the event with a ninth place finish (17:26.28).

Sophomore Margaret Kleinsmith (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) won bronze in the 200 yard breaststroke and was one of four Wildcats who placed in the top seven of the championship final. Kleinsmith registered a time of 2:17.28, while sophomore Kaitlin Gravell (Ashton, Md.) was fourth (2:18.37), senior Rayann Jaryszak (Arlington, Texas) finished fifth (2:19.43) and sophomore Perri Stahl (La Grange, Ill.) came in seventh (2:21.23).
