Women’s Lacrosse Opens Seasons with Overtime Win Against Wagner

Villanova, Pa.-  As the first three minutes of overtime were coming to a close Libby McKenna netted her sixth goal of the game to give the Villanova Wildcats a 19-18 win over the Wagner Seahawks in the season opener.

The game was close from the start.  McKenna set up Katie Comerford for the opening goal and then netted an unassisted one to put Villanova up 2-0.  Wagner then went on a 5-1 run to pull ahead 5-3 ten minutes in.  Erin Kerstetter was the leading goal scorer for the Seahawks and scored the final two of the early run.  Comerford dished it to Jessie Lee for a goal and then scored one to tie the game up at 5.

The Wildcats netted four goals before halftime.  Olivia Picciriili started it off with a man-up goal and Comerford set up Haley Driscoll to push the Wildcats up 7-6 at the 9:36 mark.  Comerford netted an unassisted and then dished it to McKenna with just over a minute to go before halftime to tie it at nine.  Wagner was able to net one more to lead 10-9 at the half.

McKenna started the half off with a goal to tie it up at 10 then Comerford set up Driscoll for the second time and Adeline Fischer netted an unassisted goal to push the Wildcats up 12-11 just under nine minutes in. 

Halfway through the second half Driscoll scored her third on a pass from Comerford followed by a McKenna goal to go  up 14-12.  Julianne Puckette netted one to push Villanova up one at the 8:40 mark and Driscoll did the same at 5:51.

With just over three minutes to go in regulation McKenna and Driscoll netted back to back goals to push Villanova's lead to 18-16.  The Seahawks answered back in the final seconds scoring a goal with 22 and 12 seconds remaining to tie it and force overtime.

In overtime Wagner won the draw control but Sydney Frank was able to force a turnover and give the Wildcats the ball.  Comerford got a shot off that went wide and with just seconds to go the Wildcats for a free position shot that they didn't take but passed off due to the Seahawks pressure.  It was Driscoll who dished the pass to McKenna in traffic as the clock was winding downed.  She was able to get the ball out of her stick with just half a second to go and net the game winner for the Wildcats.

Alexa Moro got the start in goal and played 27 minutes and had two saves and Mary Alice Collins played the rest and finished with nine and the win. 

Frank won a team high eight draw controls along with three ground balls and a caused turnover. 

Villanova will travel to Philadelphia to take on the Temple Owls on Friday at 3:00 P.M.
