STORRS, Ct.-Nearly a month ago, the Wildcats fell to UConn in four sets at the Jake Nevin Field House. With a chance to even the score, Villanova was unable to stifle UConn's strong attack in a three-set loss to the Huskies Saturday night. The Wildcats drop to 14-12 (6-8 BIG EAST) while UConn improves to 19-7 (11-3 BIG EAST).
The first set was a close contest early on but a 7-2 run from UConn led to a controlling 13-7 lead. The Wildcats peppered in some points but ultimately fell 25-14 to the Huskies. Caylee Parker was a menace on the attack for UConn with seven kills in the first set.
Coming off the first set loss, Villanova fired back with some runs of their own against UConn. Trailing 11-6, the Wildcats went on a 3-0 run including a kill from
Riley Homer to trim the Huskies' lead to 11-9. UConn recorded back-to-back points and Villanova countered again with a 3-0 run powered by kills from
Kathleen Johnson and
Andrea Campos to put the Wildcats within one, 13-12. The biggest moment in the second set was when UConn went on a 6-0 run to lead 24-15 and eventually win the set, 25-16.
Villanova struck early in the third set and grabbed a 6-4 lead after a
Kiera Booth kill. The Huskies quickly responded with a 7-0 run including a pair of kills from Jasmine Davis to lead 11-6. The Wildcats continued to battle from behind and forced a tie three times before grabbing a 17-16 lead after a
Riley Homer kill. The lead changed three times after that kill and set up a 20-20 tie between Villanova and UConn. The Huskies went on a 5-2 run to win the final set, 25-22, and the match.
