Wildcats Win Three Events, Fall Short to Georgetown 182-112 in Season Opener

Final tally on the day showed Villanova with 14 individual top-three finishes in first men’s meet of season

WASHINGTON, D.C.—In the men's season opener three different Villanova (0-1) swimmers won their individual events in a 182-112 defeat against Georgetown (4-0) at McCarthy Pool on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats recorded 14 individual top-three finishes on the day against a Hoyas team that was already competing in their fourth dual meet of the young season. Junior Kevin Geist (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) won the 100 fly, junior Reid Hutcherson (Richmond, Va.) took first in the 200 free and sophomore Nolan Danus (Morris Plains, N.J.) came in first in the 200 fly.
 
The butterfly races each saw Villanova swimmers go 1-3 at the wall. Geist won the 100 fly in 51.08 and finished ahead of junior Ryan Maher (Phoenixville, Pa.) in third place (52.95) and senior Jesse Marsh (Kingston, Jamaica) in fourth (53.00). Danus had a winning time of 1:53.93 in the 200 fly to outkick Geist in third (1:54.51) and junior Stephen Griner (Greenville, S.C.) who finished in fourth place (2:02.94). Those two races accounted for a total of 28 points in the Wildcats team score.

Hutcherson won the 200 free with a time of 1:42.95 and came in third in the 100 free (47.91) in his two individual races. He closed the meet by leading off the 400 freestyle relay for the top Villanova team which came in second with a runner-up time of 3:09.90. Hutcherson was followed by sophomore Charlie Hinckley (New York, N.Y.), Maher and freshman Patrick Hemingway (Harrisburg, Pa.) in the relay.

Earlier in the meet the Wildcats got the day started with a third place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:35.26). Sophomores Ethan Brown (West Hartford, Conn.) and Richard Nolan (Wilton, Conn.) swam the first two legs of the relay, while Marsh and Hemingway handled the second half of the race. Hemingway was the runner-up in the 50 free (21.66) to go along with Brown tallying a third place finish in the 100 back (52.81) and a fourth place result in the 200 back. Danus (1:56.21) and Nolan (1:58.93) came in third and fifth, respectively, in the 200 IM and Nolan was third in the 200 breast (2:11.75) ahead of freshman Henry Halloran (Brookhaven, Ga.) in fifth place (2:14.10). Halloran finished fifth in the 100 breast (1:01.18) behind freshman Andrew Mitchill (Killingworth, Conn.) who was fourth with a time of 1:00.62.

Hinckley tallied a third place result in the 500 free in 4:45.15. Junior Jake McIntyre (Essex, Vt.) was third in the 1000 free (9:49.7) and Hinckley came in fourth (9:54.32). Other strong results from the meet include fresman Carson Brockette (Dallas, Texas) touching the wall third in the 200 back (1:55.17) and Maher finishing fifth in the 50 free in 22.33.

The other individual events contested during the meet were in the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions. Freshman Nicholas Jubilee (Painted Post, N.Y.) had a good outing in his collegiate debut with a third place finish on the three-meter diving board (272.25) to go along with a score of 244.13 and a fifth place finish in the one-meter competition. Senior Michael Ackert (Rye, N.Y.) came in fourth on the one-meter board (255.53) and fifth (252.98) in the three-meter competition. Sophomore Noah Clipman (Mohnton, Pa.) was sixth in both diving events with scores of 238.80 and 222.98, respectively.

Villanova will travel to NJIT this coming Friday for a men's only dual meet.
