Wildcats Sink Pirates in Four Sets

Three Wildcats recorded double-digit kills in the win.

VILLANOVA, Pa.-After back-to-back losses the previous weekend, Villanova bounced back with a four-set win over Seton Hall Friday night at the Jake Nevin Field House. The Wildcats improve to 13-10 (5-6 BIG EAST) while Seton Hall drops to 11-14 (3-8 BIG EAST).

Both sides traded five leads and tied 11 times in the first set with constant momentum shifts in the first set. Tied at 20, the Wildcats strung together a 3-1 run powered by kills from Kiera Booth and Rose Crist for the 23-21 lead. Villanova was able to stave off the Pirates with back-to-back points for the 25-22 set win.

The Pirates recovered early in set two with a 6-0 run. Villanova tried to cut the deficit but Seton Hall unloaded with a 5-0 run to lead 12-3. Down 14-7, the Wildcats were able to rally with a 4-0 run with a pair of service aces from Clare Delaplane to trim the lead to 14-11. The Pirates were able to distance themselves enough for the 25-21 second set win.

With the series split at one apiece, the Wildcats and Pirates battled in another close matchup in set three. Both teams were within striking distance of each other until a pivotal run by the Wildcats halfway through. Leading 15-12, Villanova scored five consecutive points including a trio of service aces from Belle Morgan for a 20-12 lead. The lead loomed too large for Seton Hall in a 25-20 third set victory for Villanova.

The fifth set was a back-and-forth affair with both sides trading points. Trailing 9-7, Seton Hall went on a 4-0 run to lead 11-9. That lead was short-lived when Villanova answered with a 4-0 run of their own for a 13-11 lead. With the Wildcats leading 23-19, the Pirates rallied with a 4-0 run to tie it up. The Wildcats came in clutch with back-to-back kills from Rose Crist and Riley Homer for the 25-23 fourth set win and the match.
