No. 4 Villanova Defeated by No. 1 Denver In BIG EAST Semifinals, 15-5

MILWAUKEE, W.I. – On Thursday, May 2 the Villanova women's lacrosse team was defeated by Denver 15-5 in the 2019 BIG EAST Semifinals. The Wildcats concluded the season with a 10-8 overall record and posted a 3-2 conference mark.

Villanova was first to tally a mark on the board with 28:21 on the clock on a Liz Trojan goal assisted by Ashley Lynch.

Denver went on and outscored the Wildcats 7-3 for the rest of the half. The Pioneers hit two goals one minute apart after Trojan's 34th goal of the season. Nicole Concannon quickly tied things back up at two after receiving a Brittany Bruno pass. Though, the Pioneers followed up with two unanswered goals to take a 4-2 advantage.

Bruno was the last to score for Villanova in the first half. The Bruno-Trojan duo struck for the final time this season and the 'Cats were back within one goal. For the next 13:38 of play Denver put in three goals including one that came with 14 seconds on the clock to help staple their 7-3 lead headed into the half.

This was the second game of the season where Denver held a 7-3 lead at the break, the first was last Friday, Apr. 26 when Villanova hosted the Pioneers for the last regular season game of the year.

Denver's first half scoring run led over into the start of the second half where they went on to score four unanswered goals for an 11-3 lead with 12:47 remaining in the contest.

Junior attack, Katie Comerford earned Villanova its first goal of the second half on a Grainger Rosati pass but 11-4 was the closest the 'Cats would come for the rest of the competition.

The Pioneers scored four more goals to secure their trip to the BIG EAST Championship round. After three, the run was broken up with a Bruno goal to make the score 14-5. Denver put the final tally in the book with 2:37 on the clock and closed out the game with a 15-5 win over the Wildcats.

For the contest seven penalty cards were distributed including one red card. Three yellow cards were handed to Villanova during action.

Brittany Bruno led the way with two goals and one assist on the offensive end. Devin Hassinger did was she does best and dominated the draw circle tallying the last seven of her career to lead both teams. Sydney Frank recorded four on the afternoon and added one caused turnover and two ground balls.

Julia Arrix was also a strong factor in the Wildcats' defense. The senior leader helped control the field and collected five ground balls.

Freshman goalkeeper Alexa Moro was a huge factor in the net for Villanova. She recorded 12 saves in the contest including six saves on Denver free-position shots. Olivia Gonsalves also saw action in her last collegiate game and ended her career with 66 saves and a .405 save percentage. Moro wrapped up her rookie campaign with 144 saves, averaging eight a game, and finished with a save percentage of .454.

The Villanova Wildcats ended the season in historic style. The women honored 30 years as a varsity sport, captured its first 10-win season in program history, set individual career and season records and named a program record six individuals to the BIG EAST All-Conference Team.
