PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Junior sprinters
Danielle Burns (Phoenix, Ariz.) and
Trudy-Ann Williamson (Kingston, Jamaica) advanced to the final of their respective events, and each were a part of the women's 4x100 meter relay which competed in the Eastern final at the 125
th Penn Relays on a busy Friday afternoon. Burns qualified for the final of the 100 meter hurdles and Williamson moved on to the final of the 100 meters after advancing out of the preliminary heats.
Burns was the runner-up in her heat and came in fourth overall out of 18 runners in the preliminaries. Her time of 13.64 is a season best and the second-fastest mark of her career. She came in 20
th in the heats of the 100 meter hurdles last season, but is having an impressive weekend competing individually in both the short and long hurdle races as well as on the 4x100 relay. Sophomore
Sarah Jones (Sewell, N.J.) also ran in the 100 meter hurdle heats on Friday and came in 12
th overall with a time of 14.06.
In the preliminaries of the 100 meters, Williamson was the runner-up in her heat and came in 10
th overall out of 21 competitors. She crossed the line in 11.80 to notch her second-fastest time of the season, trailing only the personal best and school record mark of 11.58 which she recorded in Miami earlier this month. Williamson came in 13
th in the preliminaries of the 100 meters last year, and like Burns moved up to qualify for the final this season.
Villanova competed in the 4x100 meter relay for only the third time in the last 14 years at the Penn Relays. In the preliminary heats on Thursday afternoon, the Wildcats posted a time of 46.73 and came in 21
st out of 66 teams overall. Villanova qualified for the Eastern final and wound up posting an exact time of 46.73 to match the result from the preliminaries. The team of Williamson, Jones, Burns and freshman
Trinity Hart (Scotch Plains, N.J.) finished fourth in their section.
The lone women's field event on the Villanova schedule on Friday was the triple jump, in which junior
Gloria Donou (East Brunswick, N.J.) posted a mark of 11.45 meters. Her best jump of the day came on her first attempt, and she wound up placing 17
th out of 31 in the college section of the meet.
