CORAL GABLES, Fla.—Sophomore sprinter
Trudy-Ann Williamson (Kingston, Jamaica) broke the school record in the 100 meter dash and junior hurdler
Danielle Burns (Phoenix, Ariz.) became the seventh Villanova athlete to break one minute in the 400 meter hurdles on a big afternoon for the Wildcats at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational. Williamson recorded a time of 11.58 in the 100 meters to lower a school record which had stood for nearly five years.
The efforts of Williamson and Burns took center stage for Villanova on the second and final day of the meet at Miami's Cobb Stadium. Williamson added to her 100 meter record with an outdoor personal best in the 200 meters, while Burns' time of 59.99 in the 400 meter hurdles moved her up two spots to seventh on the Wildcats all-time performance list. The times posted by both runners in their respective events put them in contention for berths at the NCAA East Preliminary meet next month.
Williamson broke the previous school record of 11.71 in the 100 meters. The old mark had been set by Varonica Johnson in the final of the BIG EAST Championships at Villanova on May 11, 2014. Johnson established the Wildcats standard in the 100 meters twice during her career; prior to the time of 11.71 in 2014 she had run 11.74 two years earlier to eclipse the mark of 11.80 which had been held by Kia Davis since 1996. That mark stood for 16 years, but Johnson and Williamson have now combined to lower the standard three times in the last seven seasons.
In the 200 meters, Williamson crossed the finish line in 24.17 and notched the second-fastest time of her career. Her lifetime best is 24.13 from this year's indoor season, while her previous outdoor best was 24.34 at last year's Colonial Relays. Saturday's mark puts Williamson fourth on Villanova's outdoor performance list in the 200 meters; she already ranks third overall in the Wildcats record book with her indoor time.
Burns came in fourth out of 15 runners in the 400 meter hurdles and became the first Villanova runner since 2013 to cross the finish line in under a minute. Her previous personal best had been 1:00.72 at the Temple Owls Invite last season. She is only the Wildcats third runner in the past 20 seasons to break the minute mark in the 400 meter hurdles. Burns also came in fifth in the 100 meter hurdles on Saturday with a time of 13.81. She was an All-BIG EAST performer in both hurdle events last season.
Sophomore sprinter
Sarah Jones (Sewell, N.J.) recorded a personal best time of 25.44 in the 200 meters and also came in eighth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.10. Freshman multi-event athlete
Liv Morgan (Bronx, N.Y.) posted times of 15.43 in the 100 meter hurdles and 26.15 in the 200 meters. She also posted a mark of 5.38 meters in the long jump.
Also in action on Saturday afternoon was junior
Gloria Donou (East Brunswick, N.J.), who tallied marks of 5.52 meters in the long jump and 11.50 meters in the triple jump. Her effort in the long jump was an outdoor personal best and was just shy of her lifetime best of 5.52 meters set indoors two years ago.
