Villanova, Pa. – Villanova volleyball (12-3, 3-1) is set to travel to Queens, NY for a mid-week matchup with St. John's (10-7, 2-2) Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
The Wildcats are coming off a strong showing at home, defeating Xavier and Butler each in straight-sets last weekend and will work to build on that momentum.
"St. John's is really good and it's a huge match for us," head coach
Josh Steinbach said. "It's going to be a challenge. Not only because St. John's is good and really talented at every position, but for us it's on the road and during midterms. We have to make sure our focus is great and we are going to have to play our best match of the year to get out of there with a win. We are looking forward to it."
Villanova is 19-14 all-time against St. John's. The teams split last season's meetings, with Villanova winning 3-2 at home and losing 0-3 at St. John's.
Regan Lough posted 31 digs in the win and
Emma Decker tallied 45 assists. The loss featured a first-set loss by a score of 33-31, a heartbreaking set that the Wildcats could not recover from.
St. John's is currently 10-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Red Storm's two conference losses are to No. 10 Marquette and No. 14 Creighton. St. John's does have two Power-Five wins on their resumé with wins over Oregon and Duke, each by a score of 3-1 during the Hofstra Invitational. St. John's is led by sophomore Efrosini Alexakou with 229 kills, the current BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. Her 4.02 kills/set are good for second in the conference. Erica DI Maulo is the assist leader with 570, and Amanda Sanabia leads in digs with 220.
