Villanova Defeats Navy 3-0

 

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Villanova women's volleyball team sweeps Navy 3-0 in the final match of the Kristen Dickmann Memorial on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy.

Head coach Josh Steinbach on defeating Navy, "Good win at Navy, who play really hard. I thought we got a good team win with everyone contributing. I really like where our team is headed."

Junior middle blocker Allie Olsonoski was named to All-Tournament Team for her play this past weekend. She had 22 kills and six blocks.

Freshman right side hitter Sanaä Barnes once again led the Wildcats in kills with seven. It was her fourth game in a row as the team leader in kills.

Junior setter Emma Decker had 25 assists and five kills in the match.

The first set started off back and forth. Villanova would get their first lead of the match at 9-8, off an attacking error by Navy. The Wildcats would hold onto the lead to finish the set and win 25-19.

Villanova and Navy would battle back and forth in the second set. There were 13 tie scores and eight lead changes. The Wildcats would jump out to a 7-4 lead but then Navy would rally back to take a 10-9 lead. Villanova would then get a 20-17 but once again Navy would fight back to tie the match up at 22. Navy would win two of the next 3 points to take a 24-23 lead. The Wildcats would go on to win the next three points off a kill by Olsonoski, block by Mallory Potts and Amanda Pedersen-Henry. Junior libero Regan Lough would win the set for the Wildcats with a service ace.

The Wildcats would jump out to a quick lead to start the third set. Villanova won the first five points of the set. Navy would trail 10-2 but would cut back into the lead to make it 17-14. The Wildcats would go on another big run of 8-1 to win the set 25-15.

It was the Wildcats second sweep of the weekend after defeating Dartmouth 3-0 yesterday. Earlier this afternoon Villanova lost to Alabama.

Up next for the Wildcats is Utah on Friday September 7th for the Villanova Classic and the Wildcat's home opener. Villanova will also play High Point on Saturday and at Temple on Sunday.
