Villanova Sweeps Georgetown

Second sweep in a row

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Villanova women's volleyball team swept the Georgetown Hoyas 3-0 on Friday night. With the victory, Villanova improves to 13-11 and 6-6. While Georgetown falls to 13-11 and 6-6. It was Villanova's sixth sweep of the season including their second sweep in a row.  

Head coach Josh Steinbach on the match, "good to get a win on the road. I thought we won the serve and pass game which was the most important thing. It's going to be a fun battle for the last three weeks in the BIG EAST."

Freshman outside hitter Clare Delaplane led the Wildcats with nine kills. She also had seven digs.

Junior setter Emma Decker dished out 18 assists. Decker also had three kills and three blocks.

Junior libero Regan Lough had 12 digs and one ace.

Wildcats opened the match on a series of runs. First with a 4-0 run and then a 5-0 run to lead 9-1. The Wildcats then went on another 4-0 run to lead 13-2. But Georgetown would go on a multiple scoring runs to cut into Villanova's lead and only trail by three. With the score 18-15 the Wildcats went on multiple 3-0 scoring runs increase their lead and took the opening set 25-17.

The second set started off back and forth with the score being tied multiple times. Neither team led by more than one point until a ball handling error by the Hoyas gave Villanova a 10-8 lead. The Hoyas then went on a 3-0 run to retake the lead. With the Wildcats down 12-16, Villanova went on a 5-1 run to tie the set at 17. The set continued to go back and forth. With the score tied at 20, the Wildcats went on a 3-0 run to retake the lead 23-20. Villanova would continue to hold the lead and won the second set 25-21.

Villanova jumped out to a 4-0 lead to begin the third set. The Wildcats went on a 3-0 scoring run later in the set to increase their lead to 12-6. The Hoyas would rally back though to tie the set up at 13. Villanova responded with a 3-0 run to retake the lead 16-13. The closest the Hoyas would ever get again was 18-16. The Wildcats continued to lead the rest of the way and won the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.

The Wildcats will return home to Jake Nevin Field House next weekend to take Marquette and DePaul. Both matches start at 8:00 p.m. Live stats and live streaming will be available.
