April 1, 2017 WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Senior sprinter Veronica Scott (Plymouth, N.H.) equaled the top time of her career in the 400 meter hurdles and emerged as the winner of the event at the 52nd annual Berkeley Realty Colonial Relays at Zable Stadium on Friday afternoon. Scott was one of 15 athletes in competition for Villanova on the second day of the meet. The day's action yielded five top-eight results for the Wildcats.
Scott came in first out of 64 runners in the 400 meter hurdles and produced a winning time of 1:01.26. It matches the time she recorded when she won the BIG EAST title last season. She ran in the first section of the hurdles in Friday's race and held off Dannah Hayward of Saint Joseph's (1:02.17) by nearly a full second to win the section.
There were two challengers for the win in the second section, with Binghamton senior Sarah Osaheni winning that heat in 1:01.65 to challenge but not pass Scott's leading mark. Freshman Danielle Burns (Phoenix, Ariz.) and sophomore Temi Odukale (Sewaren, N.J.) recorded times of 1:04.37 and 1:05.60, respectively, to place 14th and 25th in the field of 64 competitors.
Villanova also got a strong result from freshman McKenna Keegan (West Grove, Pa.) in the 400 meters. She made her outdoor collegiate debut after a strong indoor campaign and finished third out of 66 runners with a time of 56.42. Juniors Sidney Hayes (Spring Grove, Pa.) and Yazmin Wilson-Jones (Staten Island, N.Y.) also ran the 400 meters and had times of 59.08 and 1:00.58 on a cool and wet day.
Sophomore distance runner Ann Campbell (Mission Hills, Kan.) was the last Villanova runner to take the track on Friday evening, and the wait was worthwhile. She came in fifth overall out of 97 runners in the 5000 meters with a personal best time of 16:51.17. Campbell shattered her previous top mark of 17:17.77 which had come at last year's outdoor BIG EAST Championships.
Another noteworthy sprint performance was in the 200 meters where sophomore Niki Cleary (Flemington, N.J.) recorded a personal best time of 26.50. Junior Melissa June (Massapequa, N.Y.) and senior Kalissa Caesar (Port Jervis, N.Y.) registered times of 12.68 and 12.78, respectively, in the 100 meter dash. In the 800 meters, junior Rebecca Del Rossi (Canton, N.Y.) crossed the finish line in 2:12.74 and freshman Amari Onque-Shabazz (Plainfield, N.J.) recorded a time of 2:16.11.
Freshman Gloria Donou (East Brunswick, N.J.) and sophomore Alex Patrick (Media, Pa.) competed in the long jump and placed seventh and 12th, respectively. Donou registered a mark of 5.11 meters on her third and final attempt, while Patrick measured a distance of 5.01 meters on her first jump.
Senior thrower Caroline Hamilton (Nottingham, Pa.) came in eighth in the championship section of the javelin with a throw of 38.60 meters. The university section of the event scheduled for later in the day was cancelled after heavy rains created a dangerous surface on the infield.
The remainder of the field events and the relay races which the meet is known for remain scheduled for Saturday.
