Villanova Falls to Creighton in Four Sets

OMAHA, Neb. - The Villanova volleyball team dropped its first BIG EAST match of the season 25-23, 17-25, 25-19, 25-13 to Creighton on Sunday afternoon in Omaha, Neb.

The Wildcats (11-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) were led by Claire Crutchfield (Falls Church, Va./Bishop O'Connell) and Amanda Pedersen-Henry (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta High) who each had a dozen kills.

Allison Fitzgerald (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) paced the defense with 22 digs while Emma Pettit (Ft. Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) passed out 39 assists.

Creighton (8-7, 2-0 BIG EAST) was led by Jaali Winters who finished the match with a 23 kill, 11 dig double-double.

The first set was tied 4-4 before Creighton went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. Villanova trailed 24-21 before scoring a pair of points to cut the lead to one. The Blue Jays scored the final point to win the set.

The Wildcats bounced back with a win in the second set by breaking open the set with a 4-0 run of their own to make the score 8-3. Villanova continued to methodically increase the lead up to eight when Allie Loitz (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista) ended the set with one of her nine kills.

Creighton jumped ahead 4-0 early in the third set. The Wildcats got back into the set and cut the lead to 21-19 late in the set. After that point, Creighton put together a 4-0 run to end the set.

The fourth set was all Creighton as the Blue Jays started the set with the first five points and never led by less than four points.

The Villanova volleyball team returns home on Friday, Oct. 2 to take on Marquette at 7:00pm in the Jake Nevin Field House at Villanova University.
