MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The Villanova volleyball team's eight match win streak was snapped on Saturday night in a 25-15, 24-26, 25-22, 25-15 loss to Marquette.
The Wildcats (19-5, 9-2 BIG EAST) were led by freshman Amanda Pedersen-Henry (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta High) with 14 kills. Gabby Pethokoukis (Western Springs, Ill./Benet Academy) and Allie Loitz (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista) added 10 kills apiece in the loss.
Emma Pettit (Ft. Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) tallied 41 assists while Michelle Adams (Sugar Land, Texas/William P. Clements) and Allison Fitzgerald (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) led the defense with 16 digs each.
Marquette (16-7, 8-3 BIG EAST) was led by freshman Taylor Louis with 19 kills on the night.
Marquette started the match by scoring the first four points only to have Villanova score four of the next five to cut the lead to 5-4. The Wildcats took the lead once at 12-11 but the Golden Eagles responded with an 11-1 run to open up a nine point advantage. Three points later Marquette claimed the first set with a 25-15 win.
The second set was tied at 11-11 when the Eagles went on a 6-1 run to force a Villanova timeout. After the timeout the Wildcats scored three straight points to cut the lead to two and the 'Cats eventually tied the set at 24-24. A Loitz kill gave Villanova the lead and a Marquette hitting error ended the set in the Wildcats favor.
Set number three saw the score tied on 15 occasions and seven lead changes. The final tie was at 21-21 when Marquette score three straight points to take a late lead and a set win a point later.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the fourth which forced a Villanova timeout. Marquette added to the lead and eventually led by a dozen points, 23-15.
With the loss Villanova drops to 9-2 in the conference but stay in second place and own the tie breaker against third place Marquette. The Wildcats return home for a pair of matches against Creighton on Friday and Georgetown on Saturday.
