Villanova, Pa. - The Villanova volleyball team dropped their last home match of the season against Marquette in three sets with scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-19. While inaccurate hitting proved a problem for the Wildcats this evening, lack of effort was not one.
"I am proud of our team tonight," said Head Coach Josh Steinbach. "They play hard every night and though we didn't finish games tonight I thought we got better as a team today. Cara blocked the ball extremely well and I thought Michelle had a great night defensively."
After a highly successful weekend, middle blocker Cara Cunningham now sits atop the Villanova program's single-season record for block assists with a grand total of 107. The freshman's standout performance tops previous record holder Adrian Semrau who logged 97 block assists in 2006. Cunningham marks the first Wildcat in program history to log triple-digit block assists in a single season.
Against the Golden Eagles, Cunningham reached a game high 7 blocks against an incredibly aggressive MU offense that posted an attack percentage of .306.
As a team, the Wildcats logged 10 total team blocks, the highest in ten matches, the last time Villanova posted double-digit blocks in a match was against Creighton on October 11.
The Wildcats were led by sophomore outside hitter Claire Crutchfield with nine kills on 25 attempts with five errors for an attack percentage of .160. Close behind, junior outside hitter Colleen Hickey logged six kills while sophomore Michaela Berendt and junior Lauren Carpenter each added five.
Junior Emma Pettit and senior Allie DiBernardo, who continue to split the setter duties, logged 14 and 10 assists, respectively.
Junior libero Michelle Adams posted a game high 18 digs against a strong Golden Eagle offense.
As a team, the Wildcats posted 31 kills on 124 attempts with 20 errors, 30 assists, 55 digs and 10 total team blocks.
Next weekend's matches on the road against Creighton and Georgetown will be the Wildcat's final weekend of competition for the 2014 season.
