VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova continued its winning ways on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-12) sweep over Loyola in the Villanova Classic at Jake Nevin Fieldhouse.
Like last night, the Wildcats (7-2) used a total team effort in the victory. Junior Morgan Petkovich earned 11 kills with no errors to hit .478 in the match. Krista Andersen recorded eight kills with no errors to hit a stellar .533 clip. Senior Maria Nolan had four kills and three blocks.
Freshman Allie DiBernardo gave out 29 assists to her teammates, while sophomore Mariah Henley collected 12 digs. Andersen added eight digs.
Petkovich served and ace and Andersen followed with a kill to give Villanova a 9-3 lead in the first set. Loyola called timeout after two errors extended `Nova's lead to 17-10 and Henley served four points in a row to close out the set with Villanova winning, 25-12.
In the second frame the Greyhounds led 7-5 after an error from Villanova, but the `Cats scored six unanswered points including two aces from Henley, to take an 11-7 lead and send Loyola into a timeout. A kill from sophomore Julie Joyce and two from Petkovich extended the Wildcats' lead to 18-12. After a final timeout from the Greyhounds Nolan found the floor for a kill and Petkovich served an ace to lead 23-15. A kill from Andersen gave Villanova set point, 24-15, but Loyola scored twice before Andersen smashed the winning kill, 25-17.
The third set belonged to the Wildcats as they went on a 13-0 run on serves from DiBernardo to lead 16-4. After a timeout from Loyola, sophomore Allison Williams found the floor for a kill to stay in front, 20-7. Villanova led 22-10 after a kill from freshman Molly O'Neil and Nolan, along with sophomore Carly Edwards hit the final two kills as the Wildcats won, 25-12 to complete the sweep.
Villanova will conclude the Villanova Classic at 7:30 p.m. against TCU.
