BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Villanova volleyball team earned its fourth consecutive victory on Tuesday evening with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 27-25) victory over Lehigh at the Leeman-Turner Arena.
Redshirt sophomore Morgan Petkovich and sophomore Krista Andersen led the Wildcats (5-3) with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Junior Maggie Mergen connected on nine kills and freshman Allison Williams tallied a .455 clip while posting seven kills.
Freshman Alyssa Anderson dished out a match-high 24 assists, while junior Courtney Oertli chipped in 11.
Junior Kim Maroon collected a match-high 18 digs.
In the first set both teams remained close, but Petkovich connected on back-to-back kills to give Villanova a 6-5 advantage. An ace from Mergen extended the lead to 10-7, but the Mountain Hawks scored five unanswered as they grabbed a 14-13 lead. The teams traded points, but a combined block from Petkovich and Williams put the Wildcats in front, 22-21. Petkovich connected on another kill to give Villanova set point at 24-22, but Lehigh came back to tie the score at 24 apiece. K. Andersen found the floor for a kill and set point at 26-25 and earned the 27-25 victory after slamming the winning kill in the following play.
After trailing in the second frame, Villanova came back to tie at 6-6 and aces from freshman Mariah Henley and Petkovich gave the `Cats a 10-7 lead. After a kill from sophomore CeCe Twitty extended the lead to 13-9, Lehigh came back on a 6-1 run to regain the lead at 15-14. Twitty served an ace to take the lead back at 17-15 and Villanova played for set point after Petkovich found the floor for a kill, 24-20. A. Anderson served an ace on the following play for the 25-20 win in the set.
Lehigh jumped out to a lead in the third set, but Villanova pulled within two points, 8-6, after a combined block from Petkovich and Twitty. Mergen connected for two kills to bring the `Cats within one point, 13-12, but Villanova used a timeout trailing 18-14. Two quick points for the Wildcats following the break had Lehigh calling a timeout with the score at 19-17. Villanova came out of the break on a 4-1 run and took its first lead in the set after Maroon launched an ace. Mergen connected on a kill for a 22-21 lead and tipped the ball to tie the game at 23 apiece. Following an error from the Wildcats Lehigh earned set point, but Mergen found the floor to tie at 24. A miscue from the Mountain Hawks gave Villanova set point, 25-24, but Lehigh remained in the game tying at 25. The Wildcats played for set point again at 26-25 after Twitty connected on a kill and an ace from Oertli gave Villanova a 27-25 win and a 3-0 match sweep.
The Wildcats will travel to the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islander Classic for the weekend where they face Houston Baptist at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10.
