NEWARK, Del. - The Villanova volleyball team (1-3) fell 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-21) in a weekday match at Delaware on Tuesday evening.
Redshirt sophomore Morgan Petkovich and junior Maggie Mergen led the `Cats offensively with 12 and 10 kills respectively.
Junior Kim Maroon collected a season-high 27 digs, while classmate Kara Chatham notched a career-high 16. Junior Courtney Oertli dished out 25 assists to her teammates.
Freshman Allison Williams connected on a kill to tie the first set at 10-10, but the Blue Hens scored five straight points forcing Villanova to call a timeout. Williams found the court on an additional kill, but Delaware remained strong and used a 10-4 run to close out the set with a 25-14 victory.
The Wildcats grabbed an early 5-2 lead in the second frame, but Delaware responded to tie at nine apiece. Petkovich connected on back-to-back kills and Chatham posted on to help Villanova tie the score at 15, but could not grab a lead and called a timeout trailing 21-17. Sophomore Krista Andersen tallied a kill before the `Cats fell 25-18.
The teams treaded points back and forth in the third set before Villanova went in front, 14-12 after four errors from the Blue Hens and a kill from Mergen. The Wildcats called a timeout trailing 20-18 and used its second timeout after Delaware notched two quick points following the break, but the Blue Hens won the third set 25-21 and earned the match victory.
Villanova will get back to action at the Big 5 Tournament hosted by Penn Friday and Saturday. The Wildcats take on La Salle Friday at 4:00 p.m.
