WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Villanova volleyball team swept Georgetown 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-22) on Friday evening at McDonough Arena for its 10th conference victory this season.
Redshirt sophomore Morgan Petkovich led the Wildcats (22-6, 10-3 BIG EAST) with a double-double posting 13 kills and 10 digs. Junior Maggie Mergen connected on 10 kills with just two errors to hit .348.
Freshman Alyssa Anderson dished out a match-high 30 assists while junior Kim Maroon collected 19 digs.
Villanova combined to hit .252, while holding the Hoyas to just a .164 hitting percentage.
The score in the first set was tied five times before Villanova could take a 10-7 lead after an error from the Hoyas. Freshman Allison Williams and Mergen connected on kills to extend `Nova's lead to 15-10 as Petkovich smashed two kills and Williams earned a block to stay in front 20-13. Mergen found the floor for a kill to give the Wildcats set point at 24-16, but Georgetown held on for three additional points before sophomore Krista Andersen smashed a winning kill for a 25-19 victory.
In the second frame, the Hoyas got on the board first and Villanova fell behind 5-2 in the second frame before going on an 8-0 run to take a 10-5 lead following a kill from Petkovich. Mergen connected on a kill to extend the Wildcats' lead to 18-12 while Petkovich hit back-to-back kills to extend their lead to 20-13. It was K. Andersen smashing the winning kill again to take the set, 25-18.
The third frame was close throughout with each team trading points back-and-forth. An ace from Petkovich tied the set at 18 apiece and the Hoyas followed with a kill to go in front, 19-18. K. Andersen smashed consecutive kills to tie the score at 21 and `Nova scored three unanswered points to play for match point with a 24-21 advantage. Georgetown held on for one additional point, but Petkovich found the floor for the winning kill as Villanova swept the Hoyas.
The Wildcats will head to USF to finish the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2:00 p.m.
