VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova volleyball team (13-4, 2-1 BIG EAST) fell to the Marquette Golden Eagles 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 23-25, 21-25) Friday night at Jake Nevin Fieldhouse.
With the loss the Wildcats saw their 12-match winning streak snapped.
Junior Maggie Mergen led the squad with 11 kills and a stellar .565 hitting percentage with just two errors. Sophomore Krista Andersen tallied 11 kills and hit a.310 clip.
Freshman Alyssa Anderson gave out 45 assists, while junior Kim Maroon and redshirt sophomore Morgan Petkovich collected 13 and 10 digs, respectively.
Villanova hit well in the first set combining for a .517 hitting percentage, while holding the Golden Eagles to just .182. After the Wildcats took a 13-6 lead, Marquette used its first timeout. Following the break, Maroon hit back-to-back service aces to extend the lead to 18-8 and the Golden Eagles called their final timeout. Maroon launched two more aces as `Nova pushed its lead to 21-8. Marquette ran on four consecutive points, but the Wildcats kept in front and won the set 25-14.
Marquette got on the board first in the second frame with a 4-1 lead, but the Wildcats were able to chip away and tied the set at 14 apiece following a kill from Mergen. The set tied at 19 each, but the Golden Eagles found the floor on consecutive kills sending Villanova into a break. Twitty and Mergen connected on kills out of the timeout and Marquette went to the sidelines after the set tied 21-21. MU scored the final four points and took a 25-21 victory.
In the third set, the teams remained close trading points back-and-forth with the score tied seven times before the Wildcats tool a 12-10 lead after K. Andersen connected on a kill. The Golden Eagles were able to fight back and took a 16-14 lead that forced `Nova to use a timeout. Following the break the teams stayed close tying the score six more times, but kills from Marquette put the squad in front 23-21. Petkovich found the floor for a kills to tie at 23, but the Golden Eagles won the set, 25-23.
The Wildcats found themselves down 6-1 and used a quick timeout to regroup in the fourth frame. The break helped as they went on a 6-1 run to tie the score at 7-7. Marquette regained a lead at 14-9 and head coach Josh Steinbach used his final timeout. `Nova cut the Golden Eagles' lead to three point, 21-18 after kills from A. Anderson and K. Andersen, but could not push in front as Marquette won the match.
