MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Villanova volleyball team closed out the 2009 season in a 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 25-27) loss at Marquette Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats finish the season 16-13 overall and 5-9 in BIG EAST play.
Freshman Krista Andersen posted a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs and notched a .370 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Maggie Mergen recorded 10 kills and classmate Courtney Oertli dished out 35 assists.
Sophomore Kim Maroon collected 17 digs.
The Wildcats trailed 13-8 heading into their first timeout in the first set, but closed to within one point, 17-16 following an ace from Mergen. The Golden Eagles called timeout with a 21-18 lead, and sealed the win 25-19.
Villanova trailed 5-3 early in the second frame, but tied the game at 10 each after a kill from sophomore Kara Chatham. The `Cats took 13-10 lead after a kill from Andersen and miscues from Marquette, but the Golden Eagles rallied back to tie the set at 14 apiece. VU called a timeout after falling behind, 19-17, but closed to within one point, 20-19 after Mergen connected for a kill. Chatham found the floor for a kill, but Marquette still held a 22-20 lead as `Nova used its last timeout. Andersen connected for a kill, but the Golden Eagles took the set, 25-21.
Set three was close throughout as the score tied seven times before Villanova pulled away, 17-13 after an error from the Golden Eagles. Marquette was able to come back and tie the set at 19-19 as the Wildcats called a timeout. Andersen recorded a kill to give VU set point at 24-23, but Marquette held strong to force another try. Andersen found the floor again for a 25-24 lead, but the Golden Eagles tallied three unanswered points to put the match away with a final 27-25 victory.
Villanova closes 2009 with an overall winning record. Maroon set the single season record for digs with 674 overall and continues to lead the BIG EAST. She averaged 6.02 per contest. Mergen finished the season with 349 kills (3.17/s) and a .322 hitting percentage. Andersen concluded a successful freshman campaign and is second on the squad with 331 kills (3.01/s) and 284 digs (2.84/s). Oertli dished out 883 assists this season (9.49/s).
