VILLANOVA, Pa. - Sophomore Kim Maroon had a match-high 34 digs as Villanova fell 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 12-25, 16-25) to Delaware Tuesday night at Jake Nevin Fieldhouse.
Freshman Krista Andersen added 18 digs as the Wildcats (12-6) combined for 79 digs in the match.
Sophomore Courtney Oertli dished out 35 assists, while senior Amy Gulyas added nine digs.
Villanova trailed 17-13 in the first set after a kill from the Blue Hens and called timeout to regroup. Kills from senior Elysse Studzinki and Gulyas pulled the Wildcats to within two points, 20-18, and an ace from Gulyas had `Nova within one point. Delaware called timeout holding on to a 23-22 lead after a service error, but a kill after the break gave the Blue Hens a 25-22 win.
The Wildcats trailed 7-5 in the second frame, but ran off five-unanswered points on serves from freshman Kristina Bither to jump ahead, 10-7. Kills from Andersen and Gulyas kept the `Cats in front, 18-14 as Delaware called timeout. Bither served three points with kills from Gulyas and sophomore Maria Nolan to hold on to a 22-18 lead, and Villanova won the set after consecutive errors from the Blue Hens.
After dropping the third set 25-12, there were eight ties early in the fourth stanza before Delaware jumped in front, 16-13. Back-to-back errors from the Blue Hens had `Nova back to within one point, 16-15, but three unanswered points from Delaware forced VU into a timeout. After the break Delaware had a service error, but the `Cats would not score again and fell 25-16 to lose the match in four sets.
The Wildcats continue their five-match homestand and return to BIG EAST play Friday, Oct. 9 when Seton Hall visits Jake Nevin Fieldhouse at 7:00 p.m.
