NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Villanova volleyball team (12-5, 1-3) dropped a 3-0 (25-27, 16-25, 17-25) contest at Notre Dame (9-4, 3-0) Sunday afternoon to go 1-1 in weekend play.
Senior Elysse Studzinski tallied 10 kills with no errors to hit .500 in the match, while freshman Krista Andersen also posted 10 kills.
Sophomore Kim Maroon collected a match-high 24 digs as classmate Courtney Oertli dished out 20 assists.
Set one had 13 ties as the Wildcats combined to hit .300, but was unable to overtake Notre Dame who won the set 27-25. Trailing 16-13, Andersen connected for three kills and sophomore Maggie Mergen notched two kills to pull Villanova to within one point, 21-20 as the Irish called timeout. The Wildcats used a timeout quickly after the break, still trailing 23-22, but back-to-back kills from Andersen put `Nova in front, 24-23 and set Oertli to serve for set point. Notre Dame tied the score at 24, but a kill from Studzinski put VU back on top, 25-24. Villanova was unable to maintain the lead as they dropped set one to the Irish.
The Wildcats called a quick timeout in the second frame as they found themselves trailing 5-1. They were able to pull to within one point after a miscue from Notre Dame, trailing 12-11, but fell behind 17-12 after three consecutive kills from the Irish. After using its final timeout, Studzinski found the floor for a kill, but the `Cats fell 25-16 in the set.
Villanova trailed 15-9 as a media timeout was called on the floor in the third set, but kills from Mergen and Andersen put the squad behind just four points when play resumed. The `Cats called a timeout trailing 20-13, but could not come closer though Studzinski slammed two balls to the ground after the break. VU held off match point for the Irish twice, but could not threaten further and dropped the third set, 25-17.
