STORRS, Conn. - The Villanova volleyball team concluded its weekend of conference matches with a 3-0 (25-27, 17-25, 22-25) loss at Connecticut on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats (13-13, 4-6) were led by senior Dana Tartazky who connected on 10 kills. Junior Chelsea Graman dished out 26 assists, while freshman Kim Maroon collected 13 digs. Senior Whitney Harrington had four blocks.
After trailing 6-3 in the first set, Villanova used an 8-1 run with Maroon serving to jump ahead, 11-7, as UConn called timeout. After the break, the Huskies got back into the game as the score was tied at 17 after a miscue from the Wildcats. As the teams traded points back-and-forth UConn served for set point at 24-23, but a kill from Harrington extended the match. Tartazky served an ace to give Villanova a chance to serve for set point, but was held off. An attack error from Villanova and a kill from the Huskies gave UConn the 27-25 victory.
Villanova held a 10-7 lead in the second frame after consecutive errors from UConn, but following a timeout, the Huskies took a 15-13 lead to force VU to the sidelines. A 10-4 run from Connecticut closed out the second set as the Wildcats offense faltered.
Connecticut got on the board first in the third set, but Villanova stayed close as Maroon served back-to-back aces to pull the `Cats within one point at 11-10 and forced UConn to use a timeout. The Huskies continued to connect offensively as VU used its first timeout, trailing 19-15, after consecutive errors. The Wildcats trailed 24-18 as UConn served for set point, Tartazky slammed three consecutive kills to extend the match and force UConn to use its final timeout. After the break Tartazky again connected on a kill, but the Huskies were able to close out the match with a 25-22 victory.
Villanova will return home as it hosts Marquette and Syracuse in conference action next weekend. The Wildcats take on Marquette on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2:00 p.m. and will face The Orange on Sunday, also at 2:00 p.m.
