VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova University volleyball team (9-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) opened up BIG EAST conference play today (Sept. 22) and came out victorious over the University of Connecticut (9-4, 0-1 BIG EAST), 3-2 (21-30, 20-30, 30-23, 30-25, 17-15). VU fell behind early and had to win the final three games to take the match. Seniors Alona Cherkez and Kacy Sellers shined in the come-from-behind victory as they each recorded double-digit kills in the win.

Cherkez once again led the way with 25 kills and 10 digs for a double-double. She also threw in four blocks and an ace to round out her day. Sellers had 21 kills with five digs and two blocks.

Junior Emily Brown and sophomore Amy Gulyas switched positions in the middle of the match with Gulyas taking over the libero position and leading the team with 12 digs. Brown moved to the right back position and picked up nine digs and three aces in the transition.

"Both team's played really hard the entire match," said head coach Josh Steinbach. "As a team we changed are mentality after the second game and we tried not to be so fancy offensively. Emily (Brown) and Amy (Gulyas) did a tremendous job changing to new positions and helped us out tremendously on defense."

Sophomore Chelsea Graman continued to set the ball well as she picked up 53 assists on the day.

Villanova's next contest will be tomorrow September 23 at 2 p.m. as they host No. 21 St. John's University in BIG EAST action.
