Volleyball Sweeps La Salle in City Showdown

Villanova, Pa. --- Sophomore Kerri Sullivan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) recorded 19 kills and five blocks and senior Leah Mathews (Poway, Calif./Our Lady of Lourdes) tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 12 digs as the Villanova Wildcats took three straight games from the La Salle Explorers in women's volleyball action. Villanova defeated the Explorers by scores of 30-23, 30-27 and 30-27. The win makes it the third straight victory of the season for the 'Cats and improves their season record to 6-6 while La Salle falls to 6-5 with the loss.

Adding to the offensive display was rookie Megan Abbott (Jacksonville, Fla./Jacksonville), the only other Wildcat to reach double digits in kills with 10, while junior setter Jennifer Edwards (Valencia, Calif./Valencia) dished out 27 assists while garnering five digs. Junior Kate Tucker (Lake Forest, Ill./Oak Park River) was also impressive in the victory tallying eight of 11 attempts for a team-high .545 hitting percentage. On the defensive end for Villanova, senior Erin Birunas added 11 digs.

Leading La Salle in the loss was Lauren Woods who tallied a team-high 13 kills while Molly Thatcher and Caitlin Keefe added 13 and 12 digs, respectively.

Villanova will return home on Friday, Sept. 20 when they host Duquesne in the Wildcat Classic at 7:30 p.m. Radford and Siena will open up play prior to the Wildcats match when they go head-to-head at 5:30 p.m. at the Jake Nevin Field House.
