Villanova, Pa. --- On October 6, 2002 the Villanova Wildcats hosted the Virginia Tech Hokies in a Big East volleyball match. The Wildcats gave the Hokies a good battle but came up short losing 3-1 (30-19, 30-22, 25-30, 30-21). The loss drops Villanova to 9-12 overall and 0-4 in the Big East. Earlier in the season the 'Cats felt the joys of a six game winning streak and are currently feeling the pains of a six game losing streak. The Wildcats played in spurts against Virginia Tech and when they were playing good the Hokies had more than they could handle. Coach Allison Keeley felt her 'Cats "played very well, had many good rallies but was just overmatched."
Leah Mathews and Kerri Sullivan led the Wildcats on the offensive end against the Hokies. Mathews (Poway, Ca./Our Lady of Peace) tallied 11 kills on 30 attempts for a percentage of .233 and Sullivan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) led the team with 16 kills. The 'Cats received solid play from Jennifer Edwards (Valencia, Ca./Valencia) and Jenny Badran-Grycan (Santa Monica, Ca./Palisades) who led the team with 26 and 19 assists respectively. On the defensive side Celine Nguyen (Palos Verde Peninsula, Ca./Palos Verde Peninsula) paced the Wildcats with 15 digs.
Virginia Tech contributed a true team effort with five Hokies in double digit kills. Melissa Markowski had a game high 57 assists and seemed to be wherever the ball was. The Hokies next face Seton Hall on Oct. 11 and Rutgers on Oct. 13 in Big East action.
Next weekend, Oct. 12-13, is once again action packed with the Wildcats hosting Syracuse and Notre Dame. Villanova looks to turn things around and put a stop to their current losing streak as well as post a win in Big East play. Jake Nevin Field House is once again the site of Wildcat volleyball at 2:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. Sunday with both games a must win for the 'Cats.
