Villanova Defeats Marist On Senior Day

The Villanova men's lacrosse team improved to 7-6 on the season with a 13-9 victory over the visiting Marist Red Foxes on Sunday, April 29. With the loss, Marist falls to 4-9. Prior to the game, Villanova honored its seven senior student-athletes including Matt Wilk, George Hribar, Jesse Ford, Brian O'Hagan, Tim Ristau, Michael Mullette and Andrew Bogle.

Villanova was led in the first quarter by freshman Matt Lucas (Fairfax Station, Va.) who scored all three of the Wildcats first quarter goals. Marist also scored three times in the first quarter with Jay Nahama, Sean McDonagh and Ryan McCue getting credit for the scores.

Sophomore Brian Marks (Glenmoore, Pa.) gave Villanova the lead at the 9:09 mark of the second quarter with his first of three goals on the day. Marist battled back and took its first lead of the afternoon on back-to-back goals by McCue and McDonagh. Marks scored again for the 'Cats with 4:23 left before halftime to send the teams to intermission tied at 5-5.

The third quarter was dominated by Villanova, as the Wildcats accounted for four of the five goals scored in the quarter. Freshman Scott MacMullan (Arnold, Md.), junior Michael Holloway (Malvern, Pa.) and Marks registered three unanswered goals to give the Wildcats an 8-5 lead. Following a Red Fox goal by McCue, Holloway scored again with 4:52 left in the third, giving Villanova a 9-6 advantage after three quarters.

Holloway opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a goal at the 10:39 mark. After Justin Casano pulled Marist to within 10-7 with 9:35 to play, Villanova's Andrew Bogle (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) scored twice in two and half minutes to give the 'Cats a 12-7 lead with 6:12 left on the clock. McDonagh would score twice for Marist and Holloway once for Villanova to finish the game's scoring.

In goal for Villanova, senior Michael Mullette ( Caldwell, N.J.) gained the win while making 10 saves. For Marist, goalkeeper Brian Schumeyer tallied 19 saves in the losing effort.

Villanova will conclude the 2001 season on Friday, May 4 when they host the University of Denver at 7:30 p.m.
