Oct. 5, 2001

Box Score

On Friday, October 5, the Villanova Wildcats traveled to Loudonville, N.Y. where they dropped a non-league match-up with the Siena Saints. Siena proved too much for the 'Cats defeating Villanova in four games, 30-23, 25-30, 30-21 and 34-32.

After dropping the first two games, Villanova re-grouped to pick up a third set victory. In that game three victory, Villanova was led by junior hitter Leah Mathews (Poway, Calif./ Our Lady of Peace) who paced the 'Cats on the night with a team-high 15 kills.

Game four went back and fourth and it looked as though the Wildcats were on track to set up a decisive fifth game until two key plays by Siena's Jennifer Corkum and Diana Wierzba dashed the Wildcats' hopes for an exciting comeback. The Saints squeaked out a fourth set win with a final score, 34-32, and a four game victory.

In the loss for Villanova, the Wildcats were led by Mathews who also recorded a game-high 19 digs. Freshman Kerri Sullivan (Downers Grove, Ill./ South) and senior hitter Dana Jones (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./ Fox Lane) chipped in with 10 kills a piece.

Villanova drops to 5-8 overall with the loss as the Saints improve to an overall 11-4 with the victory.

The Wildcats will return to Big East action when they travel to South Bend, Ind. on Oct. 12 to do battle with the No. 22 nationally ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. 'Nova will resume play two days later continuing their weekend trip to Syracuse, N.Y. where they will go head to head with Syracuse University on Sunday afternoon. Match-time is set for a 1:00 P.M. start.
