Swimming & Diving Sweeps George Mason

FAIRFAX, VA-- On Friday, Jan. 26, the Villanova University men's and women's swimming & diving teams traveled to Fairfax, Va., to take on George Mason in a dual meet. The Wildcats swept the Patriots on Friday, with the women rolling to victory 161-119, and the men defeating George Mason 156-133.

Sophomore Maddy Crippen was the meet's big winner, taking three individual events on the day. Crippen won the 1,650 yard freestyle (16:52.59), 200 yard butterfly (2:05.30) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:21.09), giving her six victories in six events since her return to Villanova after redshirting the 1999-2000 season.

Senior Kristen Olson and freshman Moira Durkin each were dual winners in the meet. Olson posted wins in the 50 yard freestyle (24.81), and the 200 yard freestyle (1:53.31), while Durkin won the 100 yard backstroke (1:01.26) and the 200 yard backstroke (2:10.17).

Other winners for the Wildcat women on the day included senior Katie Armitage in the 100 yard freestyle (54.04), and freshman Michelle Diago in the 500 yard freestyle (5:05.64).

Freshman diver Julie Rhines qualified for the NCAA zones in the one-meter dive against George Mason, placing second with a score of 274.95

For the Villanova men, four Wildcats tallied two victories in the meet. Diver Brian Mulligan swept the diving competition, placing first in both the one-meter (343.87), and three-meter (317.25) dives. For the second time in three meets, he also broke a Villanova school record. Mulligan surpassed Dave Echeverria's record (327.80) in the one-meter dive versus George Mason, tallying a score of 343.80.

On the swimming front, senior Duane Couture recorded wins in the 100 (48.01) and 200 yard freestyles (1:44.57), sophomore Adam Walchak won the 100 (53.23) and 200 yard butterflys (1:59.29), and freshman James Wolczynski registered victories in the 500 (4:51.42) and 1,650 yard freestyle (16:31.58).

Sophomore Peter Klimas also had an individual victory in the meet, winning the 50 yard freestyle (21.81).

In relay competition, the Wildcat men's 200 yard freestyle relay team of Justin Buland, Couture, Walchak and Klimas crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 1:27.30), and the 200 yard medley relay squad of Buland, Rummel, Walchak and Klimas took the event in 1:38.29.

Villanova will get back into action on Saturday, Jan. 27, as the Wildcat women take on Navy at 10:00 a.m.
