VILLANOVA, PA.--- On Wednesday, Sept. 20, against the University of Connecticut, the Villanova University women's soccer team was shutout by the 25th ranked Huskies by the score of 3-0, in a game played at the Villanova Soccer Complex. The Wildcats' loss was their second straight and dropped their season mark to 5-3-0 overall. Connecticut won for the third time in four games, improving to 4-3-1 on the year.
The Huskies opened the scoring at the 27:03 mark of the first half, when Jen Laccone took advantage of a Villanova turnover by beating Wildcat goalkeeper Janel Schillig with a shot from inside the box to give Connecticut an early 1-0 advantage. Despite out-shooting Villanova 12-4 in the first half, Laccone's score was the only goal by the Huskies, as Schillig saved three shots in the opening stanza.
Just 4:03 into the second half, Connecticut extended its lead to 2-0. Senior Jen Carlson found Aleva Borisjuk at the top of the box, and Borisjuk drilled a shot from 15 yards away into the top right corner of the net.
The Huskies put the game away 1:25 later, when Carlson was taken down trying to go for a corner and awarded a penalty kick. She sent a scoring strike into the lower left of the net past Schillig, extending Connecticut's lead to 3-0.
Combining for the shutout in net for the Huskies were Maria Yatrakis and Shanna Caldwell. Yatrakis made four saves in just over 61 minutes of work for the win. Taking the loss was Schillig, who saved a game-high seven shots.
The Wildcats will get back into action on Sunday, Sept. 24, hosting Mount Saint Mary's College at 2:00 p.m.
