Durham, N.C.--- In the final day of the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, June 3, at Duke University in Durham, N.C., the Villanova University women's track & field team garnered two top three finishes on the day. Senior Carmen Douma (Cambridge, Ontario) finished second in the 1,500m run, while fellow senior Carrie Tollefson (Dawson, Minn.) placed third in the 3,000m run.
In the finals of the 1,500m run, Douma crossed the finish line in 4:16.09, just 3.06 seconds behind champion Susan Taylor of BYU. Taylor took home a first place finish in the 1,500m, posting a time of 4:13.03. A nine-time All-American, Douma ends her Villanova career with three individual NCAA Championships.
"I am a little disappointed in the outcome, but I tip my hat to Susan Taylor. She ran a great race," said Douma. "I came to Villanova four years ago hoping to just contribute to the team. I never dreamed I would leave with three national championships. It has really been fun these four years."
Running in the finals of the 3,000m run, Tollefson tallied a third place finish with a time of 9:16.48. Finishing in first place was Kara Wheeler of Colorado, who ran a time of 9:02.15. Kansas State's Korene Hinds placed second in the 3,000m run with a time of 9:10.10. Tollefson finishes her Wildcat career with 13 All-American awards and five national championships.
Making her first NCAA Championship appearance, junior Marlena Robinson competed in the triple jump. Robinson posted a jump of 12.50m, but did not qualify for the finals.
