May 13, 2000

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - At the 62nd Dad Vail Regatta, the defending 1999 Overall Points Champion and Women's Points Champion Villanova Crew team finished the 2000 regatta tied with St. Joseph's for the second most overall points with 32, while ending up in a tie for second in women's points with Delaware (19 points).

The Wildcats had eight different boats compete today, including the women's crew highlight of the afternoon - the Villanova Women's Varsity Heavyweight Eight boat. Comprised of bow Amber Kyle (Telluride, Colo.), two-seat Kristin Bubnis (Milltown, N.J.), three-seat Kelly Vasek (Poway, Calif.), four-seat Greta Kropp (Derry, N.H.), five-seat Meghan Sarbanis (Hampstead, N.H.), six-seat Maureen McCurry (Chicago, Ill.), seven-seat Hannah Moore (Glenville, N.Y.), stroke Lindsay Walters (Wayne, Pa.), and coxswain Chrissy Cericola (Ventor, N.J.), the `Nova Varsity Eight took the 2000 title with a 6:36.92 clocking that was just .89 seconds ahead of runner-up Fordham.

The Wildcats, rowing in lane four, led narrowly for most of the race, except for a brief moment around the 1,100 meter mark when Fordham pulled in front. The `Cats responded immediately and stayed in the lead the rest of the way for their second Evelyn Bergman Trophy in as many years.

Other Wildcat women's crews that participated in Saturday's finals heats included the Women's Freshmen/Novice Four boat who finished fifth in 7:56.24, the Women's Freshmen/Novice Lightweight Eight squad who placed fifth in 8:38, the Women's Lightweight Four crew who came in sixth, and the Women's Varsity Lightweight Eight boat who finished in sixth with a time of 7:19.13.

For the Villanova men, clearly the shining moment of the day was the Men's Freshmen/Novice Eight boat who held off Minnesota for a victory by just four seats. The Wildcats came in with a time of 5:56.36, slightly ahead of the Golden Gophers who clocked in at 5:57.95, to capture the Lev Brett Bowl. The other men's team to reach the finals was the Men's Varsity Lightweight Eight crew, who finished in fifth place with a time of 6:16.

Purdue won the overall points trophy with 41 points, as well as the men's points trophy with a total of 26. Massachusetts took the women's points trophy with its 24 points.
