Villanova, Pa. - The Villanova men's lacrosse team hosted the #3 ranked Loyola Greyhounds tonight at Villanova Stadium and were defeated by a score of 21-7. The loss drops the Wildcats' record to 8-5 in 2000, while Loyola improves to 10-1 on the year.
The game seemed promising in the first quarter as the 'Cats scored the contest's first goal on an unassisted shot by senior midfielder Chris Larson at 13:00. Loyola came right back, however, to score a man-up goal at 11:24 that ricocheted off of a Wildcat defender and into the goal. The Greyhounds Tim Goettelmann then gave the visitors a 2-1 lead when he scored off of a David Mascarella feed for the first of his game-high five goals. Villanova tied things at 2-2 at 4:22 when senior middie Eric Dauer took a pass from senior Jack McTigue and found the back of the net. The Wildcats then went in front when McTigue fed freshman attackman Brian Marks for a 3-2 advantage.
Down 3-2 entering the second quarter, Loyola would dominate the next two stanzas. In the second, the Greyhounds outscored the host team 10-0, getting goals from eight different players. Leading 12-3 at the half, the visitors bested 'Nova 7-1 in the third quarter to take a commanding 19-4 lead. A Villanova goal by Tom Lasky at 1:11 of the third period broke a string of scores for Loyola that totaled 16 unanswered goals.
The fourth quarter saw the 'Cats outscore the Greyhounds 3-2, with Villanova tallies coming from sophomore Justin Marks, Lasky, and Randall Calvert to end the game's scoring 21-7 in favor of the third-ranked Greyhounds.
The Wildcats next game will be Sunday, April 30, at 12:00pm as they host Air Force in the season finale.
