FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - It was a banner day on Saturday, March 11 for the Villanova indoor track & field team at the 2000 NCAA Indoor National Championships, as seniors Carmen Douma (Cambridge, Ontario) and Carrie Tollefson (Dawson, Minnesota) each garnered individual national titles. The meet was held in Fayetteville, Arkansas on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
In the mile, Douma ran 4:39.91 to outdistance Georgetown's Autumn Fogg who finished second in 4:42.73. This was Douma's third career NCAA individual track title. In 1998, she captured both the indoor mile and the outdoor 1500 meter events. Douma has now earned All-American status eight times during her sensational Villanova career.
Tollefson defended her 3,000 meter indoor championship by crossing the line in 9:13.68. Kansas State freshman Amy Mortimer placed second in 9:16.53. Tollefson has now captured five NCAA crowns in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and she has claimed All-American accolades on 12 occasions throughout her illustrious Wildcat career.
Also, in the 3,000 meter run, senior Kristen Nicolini (Annapolis, Maryland) finished 11th in 9:29.23, while junior Ann McGranahan (Pensacola, Florida) tallied a 14th place effort with a time of 9:34.39.
