Villanova, Pa. - The Villanova men's lacrosse team opened up the 2000 season at home today as they hosted the University of Denver. The visiting Pioneers got the best of the Wildcats as the visitors took the contest 13-7. With the win, Denver ups its record to 2-0, while Villanova falls to 0-1.
After allowing an early goal, the Wildcats ran off three unanswered scores to take a 3-1 lead in the first quarter. Senior midfielder Eric Dauer (Woodbridge, Va./Bishop O'Connell) found the net unassisted at 8:44 of the first quarter as he scored Villanova's first goal of 2000. Chris Larson (New Milford, Conn./Canterbury School), another senior midfielder, netted the `Cats second score off of a feed from senior middie Jack McTigue (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), while junior attackman Andrew Bogle (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) put home Villanova's third goal of the period.
Leading 3-2 entering the second stanza, Villanova would be outscored 6-0 in the second quarter as Denver opened up an 8-3 halftime lead. With their goal at 13:33 of the third period, the Pioneers totaled eight consecutive scores, thus extending the lead to 9-3.
Freshman attackman Brian Marks (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown) scored his first career goal at 13:15 of the third, but the visitors answered to keep the margin at six goals. Dauer would score his second goal of the contest from Larson, but again Denver tallied a score of its own.
The fourth quarter saw the `Cats claw back to within five, but Denver finished the game's scoring with two straight goals to take the contest 13-7. Villanova's top performers for the game included Dauer, who scored twice, McTigue, who had two assists, and Larson, who tallied a goal and an assist.
The Wildcats next game will be this Friday, March 3, at 4:30pm in Villanova Stadium against nationally-ranked Penn State.
