Villanova, Pa. - On Wednesday, November 1, the Villanova Wildcat volleyball team traveled to Baltimore, Maryland to do battle with the University of Maryland -Baltimore County in a non-conference volleyball match. The Wildcats were defeated by the scores of 2-15, 15-9, 9-15, and 9-15. The 3-1 match loss brings Villanova's record to 9-17 overall, while UMBC improves to 16-12.
Leading the way for Villanova was sophomore Leah Mathews (Poway, Calif./Our Lady of Peace). Mathews paced the Wildcat attack with 10 kills. Seniors Ruth Ann Blankenheim (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Breen Eddinger (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) joined her on offense. Blankenheim recorded nine kills, while Eddinger tallied eight. Mathews, Eddinger, and Blankenheim were assisted by freshman Jennifer Edwards (Valencia, Calif./Valencia). Edwards handed out 38 assists on the evening.
Defensively for Villanova, Blankenheim led the way. The senior posted a match high 15 digs. Helping her out on defense were again, Mathews and Eddinger. The duo combined for 25 digs. Eddinger recorded 13, while Mathews added 12.
Three UMBC players tallied double digits in kills. Joanne Marshall, Bola Afolabi, and Dana Cookson each recorded at least 12 kills. Marshall led the Retrievers with 13, while Afolabi and Cookson each posted 12.
The Wildcats will be in action next on November 4 and November 5. On the 4th they play host to the visiting St. John's Red Storm (Parent Recognition Day) and on the 5th
