Villanova, Pa. - On October 7, the Villanova Wildcat volleyball team hosted the visiting Scarlet Knights of Rutgers in a Big East conference match. Rutgers entered the match 13-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big East. Their record placed them atop the conference standings. The Wildcats 6-11 and 0-2 marks placed them in 12th. Rutgers defeated Villanova 3-0, by the scores of 15-3, 15-9, 15-13.
In game, Villanova was manhandled by an explosive Rutgers offense. The Scarlet Knights hit .571 in the game one victory. Villanova could only tally seven kills, before being defeated 15-3.
Game two was no different as Rutgers jumped out early. The Wildcats did not give up and responded late. The effort was not good enough, however as Rutgers took a commanding 2-0 game lead. In the second game, Villanova recorded 14 kills, while Rutgers tallied 23.
The final game started in a much different fashion. Villanova stormed in front 4-0, but could not hold on. They kept the lead until Rutgers took control at 10-9. The Scarlet Knights did not look back as they finished off Villanova 15-13.
With the loss Villanova falls to 6-12 overall and 0-3 in the Big East. Rutgers improves to 14-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
Statistically in the match, Villanova senior Tina Zitterich (Ames, Iowa/Gilbert) led the way with 13 kills. Sophomore Leah Mathews (Poway, Calif./Our Lady of Peace) continued her excellent play, recording 8 kills and 12 digs. Assisting Zitterich and Mathews was freshman Jennifer Edwards (Valencia, Calif./Valencia) who handed out 35 helpers on the day.
For Rutgers, Kera Carter and Shayla Bush controlled the match. Carter tallied 23 kills, while Bush added 16. Ginger Schuster and Pualani Tuyay assisted Carter and Bush. The duo recorded 30 and 8 assists respectively.
Villanova will be in action next on October 8 at 1:00 PM. Their opponent will be Big East rival Seton Hall.
