Villanova, Pa. - The Villanova women's volleyball team hosted the University of Pennsylvania tonight in non-conference action. The 'Cats made short work of their Big Five rivals as they swept the Quakers three games to zero (15-6, 15-7, 15-7). The win upped Villanova's record to 8-8 in 1999.
In game one, Penn took a 1-0 lead, but Villanova then proceeded to go on a 10-2 run that gave them a comfortable 10-3 advantage. Penn could get no closer than 11-6. Junior Breen Eddinger (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Acad.) finished off the game with a service ace to give Villanova the 15-6 triumph.
Game two again saw the Quakers hold an early lead, this time the advantage stood at 4-1. In what would prove to be the most competitive game of the match, both teams traded the lead a number of times, but after Penn was on top 7-6, Villanova scored nine straight points to close out the second stanza, 15-7.
The third and final game of the night was Villanova all the way. The 'Cats jumped on the visitors early, winning 10 of the first 12 points. Junior Erin Pfotzer's (Newark, Del./Christiana) serve was returned wide and out of bounds and the home squad had themselves the victory.
Villanova's statistical leaders in the match were Eddinger with 16 kills and senior setter Stacey Moline (Sagle, Idaho/Sandpoint) with 19 assists. Pfotzer chipped in with 15 assists in game three.
The Wildcats open Big East Conference play with their next contest that will be on Friday, October 1 at Rutgers University, the starting time is 7:00 p.m.
