Nov. 6, 1999

VILLANOVA, Pa.- The Villanova women's volleyball team was unable to pull off the upset on Saturday afternoon at Nevin Field House, dropping three games to the powerful Georgetown Hoyas. With the loss the Wildcats record falls to 9-18 overall, 0-9 in the Big East Conference.

Georgetown (24-3 overall, 8-1 Big East) seized control of the first game quickly, getting strong play from Kiran Gill (14 kills on the afternoon) and Yulia Vtyurina (12 kills). The Hoyas captured the first game by the score of 15-6.

Villanova raced to a 5-0 advantage in the second game behind the excellence of junior Breen Eddinger (Tacoma, Wash.). Eddinger contributed 9 kills on the day and 10 defensive digs. But the Hoyas rallied and took the second game by the count of 15-10.

The Wildcats gave their strongest effort in the third game. They again jumped to a 5-0 advantage before Georgetown moved in front. Ruth Ann Blankheim (9 kills on the day) was a standout for Villanova. However, Georgetown pulled away late to gain a 15-11 win and complete the match.

Villanova returns to action on Nov. 10 at Temple.
