Fairfield Tops Villanova in Volleyball Action

Villanova, Pa.--- In volleyball action on Wednesday, Oct. 6, Villanova lost to Fairfield University, 3-0, by the scores of 8-15, 13-15 and 11-15. With the loss, the Wildcats record falls to 8-11 overall on the season, while the Stags of Fairfield improve to 17-1.

In the first game of the evening, Villanova fell behind early, 2-0, but fought back to tie the game at 4-4. The 'Cats went ahead on their next serve and continued on a 4-0 run to open up their largest lead at 8-4 on a kill by junior Ruth Ann Blankenheim. Fairfield rallied to tie the game, however, and went on a run of their own to take a 15-8 victory.

The second game saw Villanova go ahead early again, as it opened a 12-4 lead on a block by Blankenheim and fellow junior Breen Eddinger. The Stags came back once again and outscored the Wildcats 11-1 throughout the remainder of the contest to win 15-13 and take a 2-0 lead.

In game three, Fairfield rallied for the third consecutive game. The Stags, down 10-6, came back and took game three 15-11 to win their fifth straight match of the season. Sophomore Joanne Saunders led Fairfield with 20 kills. Senior Jen McLaughlin tallied double figures in kills as well, recording 18 kills and adding 14 digs. Setter Liz Bower had a game-high 54 assists.

For Villanova in the loss, Eddinger record 14 kills and eight digs, while Blankenheim had 13 and eight respectively. Freshmen Leah Mathews and Erin Birunas each had 10 digs for the 'Cats.

Villanova will get back into action on Saturday, Oct. 9, hosting Boston College at 1:00 p.m., at the Jake Nevin Field House on the campus of Villanova University.
