Traveling to Piscataway, N.J., on Friday, Oct. 1, the Villanova University volleyball team took Rutgers University to five games but fell just short, losing 3-2 (15-9, 15-13, 10-15, 7-15, 8-15). With the loss, the Wildcats' record falls to 8-9-0 overall on the season and 0-1 in the Big East.
Villanova won the first two games of the match against the Scarlet Knights, but Rutgers rallied to take the final three games of the evening. The win was the Knights first in Big East play in 1999, and improved their record to 8-8.
For the Wildcats in the loss, junior middle blocker Breen Eddinger was outstanding, recording 21 kills and 11 digs. Fellow junior Ruth Ann Blankenheim tallied 14 kills and a match-high 27 digs, while freshman Leah Matthews had 13 kills and 18 digs.
For Rutgers in the win, Lola Opadiran has 27 kills, and Kera Carter had 25 kills. Scarlet Knights setter Ginger Schuster had 73 assists and 16 digs on the night.
Villanova will resume play, traveling to Seton Hall on Sunday, Oct. 3, to play the Pirates at 1:00 p.m.
