GAINESVILLE, Fla.—The junior duo of
Malaika Cunningham (St. Andrew, Jamaica) and
Olivia Allen (Kingwood, Texas) kicked off their outdoor seasons with competition at the Pepsi Florida Relays on Friday evening. Cunningham finished second in the high jump and Allen recorded a strong time in the 400 meter hurdles at James G. Pressly Stadium.
Just four of the 16 competitors in the high jump cleared the bar at 1.72 meters or higher. That was Cunningham's best clearance of the day and she was eliminated along with three other athletes when the bar moved to 1.76 meters. Cunningham came into the competition with the bar at 1.67 meters and made it over on her first attempt at both that height and 1.72 meters.
Allen posted a time of 59.06 in the 400 meter hurdles. She came in fifth in her heat in her first race of the year in the event that she ranks second in school history in. Allen is the two-time defending BIG EAST champion in the hurdles and has now broken 60 seconds in the event seven times in her career. Last year her season-opening time was 1:01.49 before she lowered it to her current PR of 58.01 at the BIG EAST Championships later in the year.
