Watcke and Papanikolas Wrap Up Competition for Villanova at Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C.—Junior middle distance runner Dan Watcke (Hinsdale, Ill.) and freshman thrower Yianni Papanikolas (Toms River, N.J.) were in action for Villanova as the team wrapped up two days of competition at the Duke Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The pair competed in the 800 meters and the shot put at Morris Williams Stadium.

Watcke opened his outdoor season in strong fashion with a third place finish out of more than 100 runners. He posted a time of 1:47.93 which is the fastest outdoor season opener of his career and nearly identical to his season-opening time of 1:47.95 last season. Watcke advanced to the national quarterfinal round of the 800 meters in each of his first two collegiate outdoor seasons and was a first team All-American for the 2025 indoor campaign.

Papanikolas threw 15.88 meters in the shot put and finished first in the second of three flights in the competition. His best throw came on the second of his three attempts and put him 11th overall out of 38 athletes at the meet.
