COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Villanova women's tennis team wraps up its regular season this weekend with a pair of matches, traveling to face Georgetown on April 11 before returning home to host Haverford on April 12.
The Wildcats enter the final stretch with a 10-8 overall record and a 1-2 mark in BIG EAST play. In their most recent outing, Villanova dropped a tightly contested 4-3 decision to UConn at home.
The Huskies secured the doubles point by winning the first two matches. Chloe Lomans and Ela Platenikova defeated
Emi Callahan and
Maggie Gehrig, 6-3, while Victoria Matos and Madison McLeod topped
Lauren Monti and
Jenna Stevens, 6-2. The third doubles match, featuring
Olivia Corcoran and
Miriam Gondorova, went unfinished.
Villanova responded with a strong showing in singles play, earning three points.
Olivia Corcoran claimed a straight-set victory at the top spot, 6-3, 7-5, over Platenikova, while
Miriam Gondorova battled back for a three-set win against Matos, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Alina Kornyeva also rallied for a point, defeating McLeod, 4-6, 6-2, 3-1 (ret.).
UConn ultimately clinched the match by winning the remaining singles contests. Lomans defeated Gehrig, 6-3, 6-4, Cameron Didion earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Stevens, and Isabella Asenov edged Monti, 7-5, 7-5.
Georgetown enters the weekend with a 6-8 overall record and a 3-2 mark in conference play. The Hoyas are coming off a narrow 4-3 victory over UConn and have also recorded wins this season against Howard, Marquette, George Washington, Seton Hall, and Saint Joseph's.
Haverford holds an even 6-6 record on the year following a recent win over Washington. In that match, the Fords took control early by securing the doubles point and went on to win three singles matches to seal the victory.
