CLEMSON, S.C.—Graduate student triple jumper
Malik Cunningham (St. Andrew, Jamaica) was in action for the second straight week and recorded a season-best mark of 15.63 meters in competition at the Tiger Paw Invite on Saturday morning. Cunningham came in fifth out of two dozen competitors at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex and extended his lead atop this year's BIG EAST performance list.
Competing in the second of two flights in the triple jump, Cunningham got off to a quick start and recorded the mark of 15.63 meters on his second of six jumps on the day. He wound up measuring three jumps of 15.57 meters or longer in his six trips down the runway while competing for the second time in eight days in his return from an injury sustained last Spring.
Cunningham sat atop the BIG EAST performance list in the triple jump after he tallied a mark of 15.27 meters at the Scarlet Knight Open in New York last weekend. He was tied for 64
th on the NCAA performance list following that meet. With his latest effort on Saturday morning he vaulted into a tie for 37
th place on the national list. At the close of regular season competition next month the top 16 declared athletes in each NCAA event will be selected for the NCAA Championships.
As a senior last year Cunningham qualified for the national meet for the first time in his career and went on to earn second team All-America honors at the indoor NCAA Championships. He is one of three athletes in school history to clear 16 meters in the triple jump.
