Pine Mountain, Ga. - After three days of action at the BIG EAST Championship at Callaway Gardens, the Villanova golf team finished their last tournament of the season in eighth place after shooting 885 (296-292-297, +21). Villanova was one of three schools to place two golfers inside the top-10 and tied for the team lead with three eagles.
Matthew Copeland and
Peter Weaver led the team through all three days, as both played their way inside the top-10 in all three rounds. Weaver carded the best finish among the five Wildcats, tying for eighth place at -1 (70-71-74). His 10 birdies were the most for the team, to go along with his 36 pars.
Copeland finished even (70-71-75) in Pine Mountain and led all individuals with two eagles for the tournament. The graduate student finished with 40 pars and shot six-under par on all par 5s after three days.
After shooting 76 in round one,
Noah Peck found his groove shooting 73 in each of the final two rounds to finish at +6 (222). The senior finished the three-day event with 41 total pars, the most for any Villanova golfer. With an eagle on the 16th hole of day two, Peck gave Villanova their third birdie, tying for the team lead.
Matt Davis posted his best score in Wednesday's final round, scoring a 75. He finished at +17 (80-78-75=23).
Vimal Alokam shot +20 (80-77-79=236) at Callaway Gardens, finishing with the third most birdies on the team (7).
For the season, Villanova will finish with a 294.667 stroke average over the 31.5 rounds played in 12 tournaments.This is the lowest team score since the 2006 season, when the team posted a 294.81 average. In October, the team carded the best score in program history after placing fourth at the OBX/ODU Intercollegiate. A cumulative score of 847 was highlighted by a third round score of 279, the lowest among all teams in the final round.
