Sade Meeks Breaks School Record in the Hammer at Texas Relays

Graduate thrower now holds all-time Villanova marks in shot put, weight throw and hammer

AUSTIN, Texas—Graduate thrower Sade Meeks (North Babylon, N.Y.) set her third school record in a span of three months when she threw for a mark of 55.60 meters in the hammer at the Texas Relays on Thursday morning. The previous Villanova record in the hammer had stood for more than 20 years and Meeks is now the all-time program record holder in the shot put, the weight throw and the hammer. She has set each of the new marks in those events since making her Wildcats debut in January at the start of the indoor season.

Meeks was competing for the second straight week to open the outdoor campaign at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Thursday. The record-breaking throw of 55.60 meters came on her third and final attempt of the day after she had earlier tallied marks of 52.74 meters and 53.78 meters on her first two throws. Meeks finished 10th in a strong field of competitors in Texas and moved up to second on the BIG EAST performance list for the season.

The school record that Meeks broke was 55.13 meters and had stood since Melinda Boykin posted that mark on May 14, 2001 during the Villanova Twilight Meet. Boykin still holds six of the 10 furthest throws in the Wildcats record book, with Meeks and current Villanova senior Emily Galvin (Pitman, N.J.) each holding two marks on the program's top-10 list in the hammer. Galvin ranks third on the Wildcats all-time performance list in the event with a personal best mark of 52.36 meters which she recorded last week.

Meeks qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary meet in both the hammer and the shot put last season as a senior at Jacksonville. During the indoor track & field season earlier this year, she set school records in the shot put (15.50 meters) and the weight throw (20.88 meters). Meeks went on to be the BIG EAST champion in the shot put and finished second in the weight throw to become the first Villanova woman ever to make the awards podium in the weight throw at the conference championships.

One more event is on the Wildcats schedule at the Texas Relays and it comes up on Friday at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time (11:30 a.m. Central time) when graduate thrower Taryn Ashby (Pittston, Pa.) competes in the javelin. Ashby is the current Villanova record holder in the javelin and is the Wildcats only athlete to throw for more than 50 meters since the current javelin implement was introduced prior to the 1999 season.
