BLACKSBURG, Va.—Graduate thrower
Sade Meeks (North Babylon, N.Y.) broke the all-time Villanova record in the shot put with a throw of 15.50 meters during competition at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet on Saturday afternoon. Meeks, who already became the Wildcats record holder in the weight throw earlier this year, added another school standard to her resume with Saturday's performance at Rector Field House. Meeks and graduate
Jul Thomson (Otterville, Ont.) were each in competition Villanova as the two-day meet wrapped up.
In the second of two flights in the shot put, Meeks became the first Wildcats thrower to surpass 15 meters when she recorded a mark of 15.21 meters on her second attempt of the day. She was in eighth place after three initial throws and was among the nine athletes – all but one from the second flight – who advanced to the final for three more attempts. On her fifth throw of the afternoon Meeks broke the record again and moved up to seventh place by extending her mark to 15.50 meters. The new record also put her into the lead atop the BIG EAST performance list for this season pending the outcome of other meets around the country this weekend.
Thomson competed in the first flight of the shot put on Saturday and threw for 13.48 meters. She came in fifth in her flight and 15
th overall in the competition while registering a new indoor personal best. The mark came on her first throw of the day.
