STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—Villanova opened the 2020 indoor track & field season with three athletes in competition at the Great Dane Classic on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore jumper
Malik Cunningham (St. Andrew, Jamaica) was the top collegiate finisher in the triple jump, while senior
Thomas Conboy (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and sophomore
Jim Keys (Herndon, Va.) each competed in the pole vault at Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex.
Cunningham was the overall runner-up out of 11 athletes who competed in the triple jump. He recorded a mark of 15.14 meters and notched his third jump of better than 15 meters in a Wildcats uniform. Cunningham and a club athlete from Next Level AC were the only two competitors to jump at least 15 meters in the competition.
In the pole vault, Conboy and Keys both cleared the bar at a height of 4.65 meters. The mark tied a personal best for Keys, who originally made it over at that height during the Dr. Sander Invitational/Columbia Challenge as a freshman last season. Conboy came in third and Keys fourth at Saturday's season-opening meet.
Villanova will have its first full team meet of the year this coming Friday and Saturday when it competes in travels to Navy to compete in the Wesley A. Brown Invitational.
